Mexican prosecutors say they have recovered 55 bodies from an airshaft of a mine in southern Mexico amid conflicts between drug traffickers.
This appears to be the largest mass grave ever found in the country. The bodies were found in the state of Guerrero, which is one of the most violence-stricken states of Mexico.
“By Saturday night, the total number of bodies recovered from that airshaft was 55, so terminating the work,” Albertico Guinto Sierra, a local official, said on Monday.
The victims were found 100 meters down the airshaft, which is located near the entrance to a mine.
Mexico has endured a staggering level of drug-related violence during over the past few years.
The situation has become worse since the Mexican military crackdown on organized crime.
Over 22,700 have lost their lives in drug-related violence in the past three years.

White House Staffers Party Hard
Suns out, guns out…
It’s going to take more than a little oil and a brittle economy to keep these White House staffers down…or their shirts on. Check out White House spokesman Tommy Vietor and chief speechwriter Jon Favreau partaking in an impromptu, shirtless beer pong match at Old Glory in Georgetown on Sunday.
Who says working at the White House is all work and no play?

On this matter of offering federal jobs to potential candidates to induce them not to run against Senate Democratic incumbents, this White House is drifting dangerously close to the falls.
Colorado’s Andrew Romanoff has now confirmed that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina trolled three federal jobs in front of him, if he would desist and not run against incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet.
And Romanoff has produced an e-mail where Messina presents the three-job menu, one of which might be his if he passed up the Senate run. Two were with the Agency for International Development. The third was director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.
All three are juicy plums.
Romanoff and Messina both say no hard offer was made. And Robert Gibbs has assured the press the president had no idea Messina was talking to Romanoff about federal jobs that only Obama can fill.
But if Obama knew nothing of the Messina-Romanoff talks, who did? For Messina cannot appoint anyone to anything. Has Messina’s boss, Rahm Emanuel, been given the franchise to offer a dessert tray of federal jobs to people he wants to keep out of Democratic primaries?
An independent investigation needs to be conducted to determine whether Chicago-style politics has been introduced into the West Wing.

Amazing insight into our social/culture situation.

Frightened by what their constituents might say, Democrats are refusing to hold public town halls.
While John McCain is running as far as he can to the right, pretending to be tough on border security now that it is an election year, his closest friends and campaign workers are saying the opposite. Grant Woods, a McCain campaign “senior advisor” and known liberal Republican in Arizona, recently told the Washington Post in an interview, “To be an Arizonan is to be a part of Mexico.” Does this mean Mr. Woods believes the U.S. should cede parts of the country to Mexico to form Aztlan? These kinds of views should come as no surprise from McCain’s campaign staff. His 2008 presidential campaign staff included Juan Hernandez, one of the biggest open borders proponents in the nation.
McCain may fool a few people during this election year who watch his misleading commercials on Fox News. But he has 24 years in the Senate he can’t hide. Watch this 2-minute video below which contrasts Obama’s statements on immigration with Obama’s. They’re exactly the same! In fact, in January of this year, Obama’s press spokesperson Robert Gibbs praised McCain for having the same view on immigration as Obama, and said that the administration wanted him to help them resolve the issue. Even the opposition knows McCain hasn’t changed on immigration.
A proposed mosque and community center at Ground Zero continues to draw protest from the right wing fringe. Sunday, close to a thousand angry, uninformed Americans gathered in lower Manhattan to demonstrate against plans to build the mosque and community center near the site of Ground Zero, where the twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed by Islamic hijackers on September 11, 2001.
Opponents of the proposed mosque call it “offensive” and “demeaning”. Their angry and perverse paranoia willfully transforms a gesture of good will and community spirit into an insult to Americans and a celebration of Muslim fanaticism.
Those protesting the proposed mosque and community center have an uninformed and ignorant view of Islam. They see Islam as a monolithic force for evil, rather than a fragmented religious world view with both good and bad aspects.
Of course, many of the loudest voices of protest are fundamentalist Christians, with their own perverse and twisted world view, a world view that demands simple minded, black and white explanations, a world view incapable of dealing with the complexity and nuance of reality.
The project calls for a 13-story community center including a mosque, performing art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.
It is a collaboration between the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative.
The Cordoba Initiative aims to improve relations between Muslims and the West.
“The Cordoba Initiative hopes to build a $100 million, 13-story community center with Islamic, interfaith and secular programming, similar to the 92nd Street Y,” its website says, referring to the cultural institution on the upper East side of Manhattan.
The proposed Islamic cultural center should stand as a testament to the tolerance, diversity, and vitality of a great nation. Bigots should not be allowed to detract from that testament. America is better than that.
