Pelosi, Reid Bank on America’s Sitcom Attention Span

Pelosi, Reid Bank on America’s Sitcom Attention Span
Politics Frank Salvato, Managing Editor
July 6, 2007

It’s becoming quite the gamble. Once again, Democrats in Congress – led by Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi – are betting that the Sitcom Attention Span (SAS) of the American people will save their hides, this time from their dismal performance during the first six-month in control of the House and Senate. But as the old adage goes, fool me once, shame on you. . .

The list of accomplishments the Democrats have racked has been anything but what they promised during the 2006 election. They failed to end the Iraq War. They failed to reform the earmark process. Instead of “draining the swamp of corruption” they seem to have taken to bathing in it. They failed to produce meaningful immigration reform. They failed in securing the nation’s borders in a post-9/11 world. Oh wait, these aren’t accomplishments, are they?

The only things that the Democrats have succeeded in doing over the past six-months is getting the minimum wage increased (a bill which included small business incentives demanded by the GOP), spending more money on Hurricane Katrina relief (something worthy of an investigation), getting more funding for veteran’s care (something that was already in the wind) and wasting a boat-load of taxpayer money on political witch-hunt investigations. These investigations range from whether the president had the right to fire Federal Prosecutors who worked at his pleasure to a proposed investigation into ‘Scooter’ Libby’s commuted sentence. For the record, congressional investigations cost money and that money is derived from taxpayer dollars. Think about that the next time you hear Chuck Schumer or Hank Waxman proposing yet another frivolous, go-no-where, do-nothing, no-consequence, irrelevant congressional investigation simply for the media’s sake.

So, with a losing record for the first six-months in the bag you would think that Pelosi and Reid would limp away from Washington for a much needed summer recess muttering, “This leadership role is a lot harder than it looked from the other side.”

Well, that type of logic escapes the reality of the political Left.

Perhaps it’s the haughtiness born of believing their own rhetoric. Maybe it’s the by-product of our broken education system’s practice of undeservedly elevating everyone’s self-esteem. It might even be the derivative of the arrogance prevalent in the bold-but-hollow tenets of those San Francisco/Las Vegas values. Whatever the cause, Pelosi and Reid, the geriatric version of the “Dynamic Duo,’ have decided to gamble once again on the hope – fingers crossed – that the American people have the attention span of a gnat. . .post hitting a moving car’s windshield.

In addressing the 110th Congress’s lackluster performance to date, Pelosi said:

“Because of Republican obstruction I’m not very happy with Congress right now either.”

And Reid had this to say with regard to Congress’s current approval rating – 24.8%, 5.7% shy of President Bush’s approval rating which the mainstream media continues to remind us is beneath the sub-basement of the crawl-space under the cellar:

“People are down on government for a lot of reasons, but the main reason is Iraq.”

If it weren’t our security at risk and our tax dollars being wasted it would almost be funny. The main reason for the American people being so “down on government” isn’t Iraq, it’s because of the political game playing. It’s because today’s politicians, especially from the Left, insist on placing politics before government.

Here we have two Democrat Party leaders who just finished up a six-year stint demanding that their rank and file refuse to work with Republicans on even the most common sense of legislations and they have the unmitigated gall to say that the Republicans are “obstructionist.”

It was Pelosi – dark Queen of the “Party of No” – who ordered Democrats not to work on bills or even hold press conferences with Republicans whom their party was trying to defeat in November of 2006. “Not work on bills or even hold press conferences with. . .” sounds pretty “obstructive” to me.

Earlier this year, Reid undermined the mission in Iraq and the morale of the US Forces fighting there by proclaiming “This war is lost. And just last month, in an address to über-liberal bloggers, Reid declared that both outgoing Chairman of the Joints Chiefs Gen. Peter Pace and current Commander of US Forces in Iraq Gen. David Petraeus were “incompetent.”

Quite honestly, if this is Reid’s idea of compromising in the spirit of bi-partisanship, of being cooperative, then I can only surmise that his idea of a benevolent, non-partisan leader was Josef Stalin.

Pelosi and Reid are banking on the notion that the American public is too fickle, too ensconced in the SAS mentality to remember a scant six-months back to a time when they were the leaders of a Democrat Party better identified as the “Party of No,” when their only game plan for “government” was obstruction, denial, obstruction and deflection. They are betting that the SAS so prevalent in American culture will allow them to re-write even their most recent history of deception and deceit, of their placing the well-being of their political party and their political longevity before good government and doing the work they were sent to Washington do.

If we prove them right, if we allow them to get away with dodging the blame for being obstructionist, do-nothing leaders of a politically power-hungry party willing to do anything including shirking the responsibility of government to gain power, then shame on us, shame on all of us.

It’s time to demand government over politics, people. If we don’t start reminding these politically opportunistic creatures from inside the beltway that they work for us, we deserve what we get.

Intelligence Items: Greece, Colombia, Brazil

Intelligence Items: Greece, Colombia, Brazil

Anarchists are terrorists. That’s the message from senior police sources in Greece, who say that anarchist activists, such as those who hurled petrol bombs at the Culture Ministry in central Athens on Tuesday, will henceforth be monitored by the national anti-terrorist unit.

A presidential decree reclassifying the activities of self-styled anarchists within the category of terrorism was made public last week. But police officers confirmed the shift in their operations yesterday….

The US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia is warning US citizens traveling to or residing in Colombia that the Embassy has received information indicating that the terrorist organization known as the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) may be planning to target US citizens in the town of Melgar, in Tolima Department. The Embassy recommends that US citizens avoid travel to Melgar until further notice. For US citizens already in Melgar, the Embassy urges them to maintain a low profile and to avoid restaurants, bars, and other public places until further notice….

Concerned about the heightened threat of terrorist attacks against US citizens and interests abroad, the US State Department has issued a public announcement about the Pan American Games, which will be held in and around Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 13–29. The Games could be the focus of terrorist acts or other forms of violence.

US citizens planning to attend matches or participate in other large-scale public gatherings during the Games are advised to use caution and stay alert to their surroundings at all times. Even gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. Practicing personal safety measures can effectively reduce the risk of being a victim of violent crime, sexual assault, general assault, or extortion.

Rio de Janeiro continues to experience a high incidence of violent crime. Tourists are particularly vulnerable to street thefts and robberies at the major tourist attractions and the main beaches in the city, as well as areas adjacent to these popular destinations. Walking on the beaches is very dangerous at night. During the day, travelers are advised not to take valuable possessions to the beach. All travelers are urged to protect valuable personal items at all times, including passports, credit cards, jewelry, and other personal valuables, in order to guard against loss or theft.

Shantytowns, known as favelas, are interspersed with tourist areas in Rio. The government has recently attempted to reestablish control in these areas, leading to firefights with automatic weapons between drug gangs and police. Given the high caliber of the weapons, stray bullets from firefights in favelas have killed a number of people in other parts of the city. On June 25, 2007, Rio’s international airport was shutdown for a short period of time due to police action in a nearby favela.

Incidents affecting tourists in 2006 included the robbery of cars and of a tourist bus going into the city from the airport, and the murder of a Portuguese tourist at 8:30 a.m. on Copacabana beach. Drug gangs often are responsible for violence, such as the burning of public buses in 2005 that killed some passengers. While no US citizens were injured, visitors and residents alike should be aware that such incidents do pose a threat and could result in closed shops and disrupted municipal services.

In Rio de Janeiro city, motorists are allowed to treat stoplights as stop signs between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM to protect against holdups at intersections. While most police officials are honest, corrupt police officials extorted money from American tourists in 2006….

Jewish Left Hoodwinked by Anti-Semites and Climate Profiteers

Jewish Left Hoodwinked by Anti-Semites and Climate Profiteers

Boston Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL) cites anti-Semitic hate group in promoting Live Earth
by Bill Levinson

It is well known that evil thrives and flourishes when good people do nothing to stop it. Boston Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life’s (COEJL’s) citation of and Al Gore in promoting the Live Earth event shows how scams, frauds, and exploitation thrive when no one speaks out against them. It is obvious that well-meaning Jewish progressive organizations have not learned about’s official promotion of anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian positions, as well as anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic hate speech at its disgraced Action Forum. It is also clear that Al Gore is doing quite well in his occupation as what medieval people would have called a pardoner or indulgence seller, and whom nineteenth-century Americans would have ridden out of town on a rail.

Here is the meeting announcement in question.

Boston COEJL (Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, is sponsoring a “Party for the Planet”/Live Earth concert viewing on a giant-screen TV for the Jewish community and guests from 7-11 p.m. at Tifereth Israel, 539 Salem St., Malden (off Rt. 60, near Rts. 1 and 93). and former Vice President Al Gore are urging Americans to hold “Parties for the Planet” on this date to watch the “Live Earth” concert and listen to special remarks from Gore.

Let’s begin with the Live Earth event itself, which appears to be advertising for Royal Phillips Electronics. Phillips is agitating for legislation to ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs, which probably has something to do with its commercial interest in compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). We have nothing against energy efficiency, and we have in fact tried CFLs ourselves to reduce our electric bill. Our experience is that even the full-spectrum ones are suitable for incidental lighting, but not for reading or computer work. If they were, Phillips would not need legislation to ban competing products, because incandescent bulbs would no longer be competitive. This tells us everything we need to know about Phillips’ motives, and its ability to design a CFL that will sell itself.

For those who are scientifically-inclined, here is the formula for Net Present Value (NPV).

P = current outlay, in this case the cost of the CFL
A = annual return, i.e. the value of the electricity saved by the CFL
i = your required rate of return on your money
N = life of the investment, i.e. the CFL

Now, suppose a CFL saves $40 over a ten-year life span ($4/year)–and we have seen them touted as saving this much or more. The present value of that CFL, i.e. what we should be willing to pay, is $20.08 if we can earn 15% on our money–which happens only when the stock market is doing very well. In fact, the savings from a CFL are after-tax money, and this makes them even more attractive. Most CFLs sell for far less, so this seems like a no-brainer investment. However, if the light from the CFL is unfriendly to the human eye, we are not going to buy it at all. Philips should be focusing on making an eye-friendly CFL instead of asking for legislation to ban incandescent bulbs.

Our perception is therefore that Live Earth is a propaganda event whose purpose is to encourage legislation to ban incandescent light bulbs in favor of CFLs. This is entirely consistent with the Climate Action Partnership (CAP, aka Climate Action Profiteers) that wants legislation to force consumers and businesses to buy its members’ “green” products. Under color of “saving the planet from global warming,” CAP’s members are agitating for entirely self-serving legislation with which to enrich their bottom lines. We are, incidentally, speaking from the perspective of someone who has published books and articles that contend that compliance with the ISO 14000 environmental system standard should not only be free but profitable. This is because designing processes to minimize waste (like metal shavings and cutting fluids) reduces the cost of the wasted materials, and also the cost of disposing of them. Last night, we E-mailed a local wind farm information on contra-rotating propellers and turbines, of the kind that originated with torpedo screws. (If there is only one propeller, the torque will turn the torpedo and waste considerable energy on water friction. Similarly, the torque on a single windmill is wasted energy.) It seems that a California wind power group is already doing this, and we would be delighted if the local wind farm can use the idea to make its energy cheaper and therefore more competitive.* Bottom line: if you want to “save the planet,” develop green products and green energy sources that are competitive with fossil fuel power, and stop agitating for self-serving legislation to force people to use uncompetitive ones.

On the other hand, even Chemical & Engineering News‘ Bette Hileman, an advocate of greenhouse gas regulations, has compared carbon offset trading to the medieval practice of selling indulgences for sins. Al Gore, whose house uses more energy in a month than most people’s homes use in a year, buys these indulgences from a company of which he is chairman. He also has an interest in a very environment-unfriendly zinc mine, so we must conclude that his sole interest in “saving the planet” is to rake in royalties from “Earth in the Balance” and “An Inconvenient Truth.” The following quotes, meanwhile, speak for themselves as far as Al Gore’s character and integrity are concerned.

Albert Gore, 16 December 1998: “If you allow someone like Saddam Hussein to get nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, chemical weapons, biological weapons, how many people is he going to kill with such weapons? He’s already demonstrated a willingness to use these weapons. He poison-gassed his own people. He used poison gas and other weapons of mass destruction against his neighbors. This man has no compunction about killing lots and lots of people.”

Albert Gore, February 2004, regarding George Bush: “He betrayed this country! He played on our fears. He took America on an ill-conceived foreign adventure dangerous to our troops, an adventure preordained and planned before 9/11 ever took place.”

We savvy. When Bill Clinton was thinking of bombing Iraq, Saddam Hussein “used poison gas and other weapons of mass destruction against his neighbors” and “has no compunction about killing lots and lots of people.” When George Bush removed Saddam Hussein, however, “He betrayed this country! He played on our fears. He took America on an ill-conceived foreign adventure dangerous to our troops, an adventure preordained and planned before 9/11 ever took place.” Albert Gore has no character, no ethics, and no integrity whatsoever. He is a self-serving fraud, a liar, and a hypocrite. He was probably a carpetbagging snake oil salesman in his last incarnation, and a medieval indulgence seller in the one before that. Boston Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life may want to realize that plenty of anti-Semites are calling the Iraq war a “war for Israel,” and that assorted “Zionists” and even “Jews” cooperated with the Bush Administration to “play on our fears and take America on an ill-conceived foreign adventure dangerous to our troops. This brings us to our next subject: as an anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, and anti-Catholic hate organization.

Here are but a few examples of the racist and anti-Semitic hate speech that knowingly and willfully welcomed at its now-disgraced Action Forum:

* 10 out of 13 Action Forum members voted to agree that the Talmud is a “hateful scripture” and Israel is run by “Judeo-Nazis.” That is, of the 13 people who voted, 10 agreed with it and only 3 found it repugnant. The statement also included an actual blood libel of Jews: ” In this text, Jews are commanded to slaughter non-Jews who are viewed more or less as animals or at least lesser human beings.”
* 12 out of 15 voted in favor of a racist statement that Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell are “house slaves.”
* 13 out of 16 voted to agree that “Zionism is Racism.”
* 12 out of 14 agreed that “Removing all Israeli obsessed Jews from congress would stop a lot of killing.” (Note that the Jews in question are mostly liberal Democrats!)

This hate speech did not take place in a vacuum. It may well have been encouraged by official bulletins and cartoons that promote hatred and contempt for Israel, Jews, and Catholics.
is still online

This essay describes many of the familiar neo-conservatives as having “dual loyalties,” making policy decisions in the interests of the State of Israel as much as the United States.” The source (Kathleen and Bill Christison) is highly anti-Semitic.

THIS IS THE ARTICLE THAT NOAH T. WINER IS CITING. It talks openly of “Jews with divided loyalties.”

“We still tiptoe around putting a name to this phenomenon. We write articles about the neo-conservatives’ agenda on U.S.-Israeli relations and imply that in the neo-con universe there is little light between the two countries. We talk openly about the Israeli bias in the U.S. media. We make wry jokes about Congress being “Israeli-occupied territory.”

“Dual loyalties. The issue we are dealing with in the Bush administration is dual loyalties-the double allegiance of those myriad officials at high and middle levels who cannot distinguish U.S. interests from Israeli interests, who baldly promote the supposed identity of interests between the United States and Israel, who spent their early careers giving policy advice to right-wing Israeli governments and now give the identical advice to a right-wing U.S. government, and who, one suspects, are so wrapped up in their concern for the fate of Israel that they honestly do not know whether their own passion about advancing the U.S. imperium is motivated primarily by America-first patriotism or is governed first and foremost by a desire to secure Israel’s safety and predominance in the Middle East through the advancement of the U.S. imperium.”

“…(We have a Jewish friend who is not bothered by the term in the least, who believes that U.S. and Israeli interests should be identical and sees it as perfectly natural for American Jews to feel as much loyalty to Israel as they do to the United States. But this is clearly not the usual reaction when the subject of dual loyalties arises.)”

It therefore comes as little surprise when we see the following comments on MoveOn’s Action Forum:

Congressman Tom Lantos told PM Olmert of Israel that he wants to freeze the $ 230 million U.S. aid package to Lebanon. Lantos is the ranking democrat on the House Foreign Relations Comte. Lantos said, “The [Lebanese] aid package should be witheld until the Lebanese government displays responsibility”. Responsibility ? Israel is guilty of war crimes in their cowardely attack on Lebanon and the whining, arrogant Jew wants Lebanon to demonstrate responsibility ! This is another example of how many Jews/Zioniosts in our Congress use the U.S. for their own greedy purposes. DUMP ISRAEL.

Here is yet another Noah T. Winer bulletin.

MoveOn Bulletin

Noah T. Winer, Editor

Subscribe online at: moveonbulletin/

In July, 2000 Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak broke off talks with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat at the Camp David summit hosted by U.S. President Bill Clinton. That September, Ariel Sharon, chairman of the Likud party, made a provocative visit to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Control over this holy site for both Muslims and Jews is contested by Palestinians and Israelis. The visit implied Israeli sovereignty over all Jerusalem, the eastern portion of which is considered occupied territory by the international community. So began the second intifada, or Palestinian uprising.

As in the first intifada in the late 1980s, the demand is for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem — which has persisted since 1967 — and acknowledgment of the Palestinian refugees right to return to the villages from which they were forced to leave during the 1948 war that established the State of Israel. In the 33 months since, human death has saturated the region: 816 Israelis and 2,384 Palestinians have been killed.

…From The Nation:
“For in failing to focus on the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, about to enter its 37th year, and on Israeli settlements, which underpin that occupation, the Road Map misses an opportunity to end this conflict. Instead, it concentrates on Palestinian violence and how to combat it — as if it came out of nowhere, and as if, were it to be halted, the situation of occupation and settlement would be normal.”

Human Rights Watch condemns suicide bombing attacks against Israeli civilians as war crimes and crimes against humanity. [This seems to be the only real criticism of Palestinians in the whole bulletin.]

Gush Shalom, an Israeli peace group, on the Rantisi assassination attempt.

…From The Nation:
“A recent poll by Israel’s Jaffee Institute for Strategic Studies shows that 56 percent of Israelis — up from 48 percent last year – would ’support a unilateral withdrawal from the territories in the context of a peace accord, even if that meant ceding all settlements.’ Here is the signpost for a realistic road map that could be charted by the Bush Administration.”

Gush Shalom reports that the separation wall Israel is constructing in the West Bank is not at all along the internationally recognized 1967 “green line” border. The wall, officially being built for security, annexes illegal settlements into Israel.

A troubling report on the 25-foot tall separation wall from Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot describes how the system of barbed concrete walls and armed watchtowers will imprison hundreds of thousands of Palestinians without access to their agricultural lands.

The Palestinian Society for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment on legal efforts to block the wall.

Right: Gush Shalom (aka Jews for Jihad), Electronic Intifada, Palestinian Society for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment… We savvy, Mr. Winer. We savvy real good. Meanwhile, we doubt that the Action Forum’s vicious attacks on Catholics took place in a vacuum either, given MoveOn’s official position on Catholics:

It therefore comes as no surprise whatsoever that eight out of nine MoveOn people who read the following material on the Action Forum voted to agree with it.

By continuing the attack on the GOP’s culture of corruption with a call to arrest the Catholic pedophiles of America, we have the ability to break up the perverts and criminals running the country today. WE know there are hundreds of thousands of pedophiles created by the Catholic church’s shuffling them around since 1950. WE know most of these people went on to higher education. By pushing for a complete outing of the 12,000 pedophiles they’ve admitted to so far we can put incredible pressure on any politicians who might be part of the cult. How many DeLay types want their constituents to find out that they’ve taken advantage of the teenage sex trade of the Marianas islands? … But until the priests are hounded down and arrested like the baby rapers they are, the neverending cycle will continue. You want to throw a monkey wrench in both political parties? Call for the arrest and immediate incarceration of the Catholic Pedophiles of America.

Boston Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life: Are you going to continue to stand with an organization that not only promotes anti-Israel and anti-Semitic hate speech, but the above kind of hate speech directed at yet another religious faith? Is this something Jewish progressives are prepared to tolerate, condone, and support?

The White House, CAIR and the OIC

The White House, CAIR and the OIC

By Steven Emerson

The White House has admitted to a senior government official that it did not vet the audience members in attendance at President Bush’s speech last week at the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C., despite having been warned of the potential presence of individuals who might have triggered national security concerns.

An informed source has told me that the White House was completely unaware that a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) representative would be present at President Bush’s speech last week for the rededication ceremony of the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C., and, in fact, had no idea who the mosque leaders had invited to the event, basically surrendering the vetting process to the Islamic Center, a Saudi-funded institution with a documented history (pdf) of extremism and anti-Semitism.

Further, the source told me, “We desperately need to know what radical Islamists are doing in this country” and he was “shocked and surprised to learn that the White House would not take greater care of who was vetted to this event,” adding, “this was not your typical Rotary Club invitation.” The source told me that a White House official said that it does not vet all attendees at events to which the President is invited to speak, and the Islamic Center ceremony was no exception. Additionally, the White House was warned by a senior government official that it was making a huge national security error in not vetting those in attendance at the mosque. A White House liaison has told me in the past that CAIR has been barred from attending White House events on national security grounds.

And on cue, CAIR is playing up spokesman Ibrahim Hooper’s attendance at the speech and taking full advantage of its presence to insinuate itself into the President’s agenda.

On the heels of President Bush’s strange announcement at the mosque that he would appoint a “special envoy” to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), a body with a very disturbing track record (see my article published in the National Review Online, Radical Outreach: Bush coddles American apologists for radical Islam), CAIR has started lobbying for the job.

On a trip to Saudi Arabia to meet with OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ishanoglu to “discuss future CAIR-OIC projects,” CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad made his feelings on the American-OIC envoy known, telling the Saudi-based Arab News, “[w]e hope that the selection of the individual would also be representative of the Muslim community and its views,” meaning that to avoid an Awad-engineered outcry and pressure campaign, the envoy must be “CAIR-approved.”

President Bush said that the special envoy’s job would be to “listen and learn” from the OIC, and that the envoy “will share with (the OIC) America’s views and values.” Unless the purpose of the envoy would be to see who can be the more radical and anti-American mouthpiece, CAIR needs to be kept as far away from this initiative as possible, lest both organizations gang up in some outrageous, Karen Hughes-approved “grievance theater” performance. CAIR and the OIC are already in lockstep on virtually all issues, especially relating to terrorism, and CAIR is in no position to share America’s views and values with anyone. In fact, someone needs to explain America’s views and values to CAIR.

As readers of this blog know, CAIR was recently officially named (pdf) as a Muslim Brotherhood organization and as an un-indicted co-conspirator in the case against alleged Hamas-fundraisers, the Dallas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF). Beyond that, CAIR’s lengthy history of extremism, pro-terrorist sentiments and anti-Semitism has been extensively reported and is well known.

And the Arab News article telegraphs just how useless having a CAIR-approved individual as special envoy to the OIC would be:

Muslims and Muslim organizations in the US have been criticized for not being effective in lobbying and standing up to smear campaigns compared to other US minorities. This is the most common criticism heard from the Muslim world, according to Awad, who added that Muslims in the US are heading in the right direction and that the Muslim community there is becoming more effective and gaining ground in building bridges.

So the “most common” criticism has not been that Muslim organizations in the U.S. have failed to sufficiently condemn terrorism or put forward policies and positions that condemn the targeted use of violence against civilians by such groups as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda, but that CAIR is not “effective” in standing up to “smear campaigns” against it. Expect more of this if CAIR has any say about the President’s appointment.

The President’s plan to appoint a special envoy to the OIC was a bad idea from the start, and can only be further compounded by letting CAIR – or other Islamist groups like it – have any say in the matter.
