Ahmadinejad and his faction want war.

By Ken Timmerman, FrontPageMag

[..] But what’s clear is this: Ahmadinejad and his faction want war. They believe that war with the West is their ticket to victory.

Even if they lose large portions of their country, or if their nuclear sites are destroyed, they believe that they will emerge victorious. Because in their eyes, this type of war with the West will hasten the return of the Imam Mahdi, the savior figure of the radical hojjatieh sect of Shia Islam in which Ahmadinejad and his faction believe.

But don’t make the mistake some have made in placing all your bets on Ahmadinejad. If somehow the U.S were able to wave a magic wand and get rid of him overnight, we would still be facing a security and political establishment in Iran that is devoted to confrontation with the West, and to the destruction of Israel.

Don’t forget that it was Hashemi-Rafsanjani, the “moderate” former president of the Islamic Republic, who first evoked publicly the possibility of a nuclear weapons exchange with Israel. I quote him in my book, Countdown to Crisis: the Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran.

“The use of an atomic bomb against Israel would destroy Israel completely, while [the same][against [Iran] would only cause damages. Such a scenario is not inconceivable,” Rafsanjani said in a sermon at Tehran University on Dec. 14, 2001.

Decoded, the message is chilling. Iran has no fear of an Israeli nuclear attack, because Iran is a vast country, with deep underground bunkers for its leadership, and clandestine nuclear sites that most likely are not on anyone’s target list. If the Israelis were to attack, or to respond to an Iranian nuclear attack, Iran will suffer great losses. But Israel will cease to exist.

Such is the calculus of a “moderate” leader of Iran’s Islamic “Republic.”

But the Iranian regime does not believe it will fight for its survival in Iran alone. Over the past nine months, since Hezbollah’s infrastructure in Lebanon was devastated by Israeli air strikes last summer (after Hezbollah’s unprovoked attack on Israel), the Iranians have been shipping massive quantities of advanced weapons to Hezbollah in preparation for the coming war.

Iran’s clerical leaders and Ahmadinejad believe that they actually defeated Israel last summer during Iran’s first proxy war with Israel. And that they can do even greater damage in the next war, which could come next month, this summer, or next year.

Arieh Eldad, a leader of the opposition National Union Party in Israel’s Knesset, or Parliament, told me this week while on a trip to the United States that he is convinced there is “no way to avoid the next war” in Lebanon.

He sees the massive rearmament of Hezbollah by Iran, with Syrian assistance, as clear evidence of Iran’s strategy to launch another war against Israel. “Hezbollah is becoming stronger every day,” he said.

Eldad believes Israel must “neutralize Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria as a preliminary step, or we will not be able to engage Iran.”

By “engaging” Iran he does not mean economic or diplomatic “engagement,” as the State Department might use the term. He is talking about having Israel’s military take out Iranian nuclear and missile sites.

Now that’s engagement.

Dr. Eldad is a plastic surgeon who headed the burns at Hadassah hospital for twenty years. He has personally treated Palestinian suicide bombers, only to see them come back after their treatment with bombs strapped to their chests to blow themselves up in the very hospital that saved their lives.

The foes that oppose Israel and America do not reason as we do, he says. “When states have missions that are bigger than life, they are not obeying the basic rules of logic that Western civilization obeys.”

He believes the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a state, is following the same logic as a suicide bomber. “If the goal is to kill the Big Satan [America] or the Small Satan [Israel], then your own life is not to be considered under their logic,” he told me. “The Iranian regime is willing to sacrifice millions and millions of their own people to defeat the Big Satan and the Small Satan.”

Because of this, we need to understand that Tehran regime will not comply with sanctions, and does not care about sanctions. “It’s just not the same logic,” he said.

Dr. Eldad’s fear is that Israel will be “left alone” and have to confront a nuclear Iran. And if that day arrives, he warns, “the world should know that we will be ready to destroy the nuclear infrastructure of Iran at whatever the cost it takes.” “That means we will be ready to use unconventional weapons, because conventional weapons will not be enough,” he added.

These are stakes.

A seemingly simple hostage-taking could be how this begins. A series of mushroom clouds could be how it ends.

In the meantime, the U.S. is conducting naval and air exercises in the Persian Gulf with two carrier battle groups. The message to Iran, one administration official told me yesterday, was clear: Don’t make any false moves.

Winston Churchill included this in a speech in 1899

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among
men.Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly
struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”

LONDON — An Iranian opposition group claimed Saturday that Iran’s capture of 15 British sailors and marines was planned in advance and carried out in retaliation for the U.N. sanctions imposed against the country.

Iran appears intent on sending a message of strength as it faces mounting U.N. Nations sanctions over its uranium enrichment program, which the U.S. and other nations suspect the Islamic Republic is using to develop nuclear weapons.

Hossein Abedini, a member of the opposition group’s foreign affairs committee, claimed the group had obtained information from sources within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard and had passed details to the British government.

Mohammad Mohaddessin, who handles foreign affairs for the council, said in a statement that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had ordered the detention of the Britons in the hope of pressuring the British government over a threat to toughen U.N. sanctions.

Abedini told a London press conference that an Iranian Revolutionary Guard naval garrison had been on alert from the night before the kidnapping, to prepare for the operation.

“You can see that the clerical regime had in a premeditated act arrested British sailors in order to win concessions from the international community and divert attention from its nuclear project,” Abedini said. “Claims that the sailors were arrested in Iranian territorial waters are baseless.”

Britain’s Foreign Office reiterated that the personnel “were in Iraqi waters and we continue to request immediate consular access to them and their immediate release.”

Britain has frozen most contacts with Iran and referred the issue to the U.N. Security Council, which expressed “grave concern” on Thursday over Iran’s seizure last week of the Britons.

Former Jimmy Carter/Iran Hostage Schools Us All

Former Jimmy Carter/Iran Hostage Schools Us All

Excerpts of An Interview On Hannity & Is Anybody Homes ( OLIVER NORTH: First of all, you’ve got to remember, the Iranians will repeatedly lie. I mean, they do it all the time. COLMES: Why would you say that? ):

DAVID ROEDER, FORMER HOSTAGE IN IRAN: Well, as David Jacobson said last night on your show, who knows who was behind the scenes with a gun to one of the other sailors or royal marines? Obviously, the young lady is scared, and that’s understandable. This is deja vu all over again, as Yogi said. I think leaving the folks with blindfolds, the nice little communal meal. What they don’t tell you is, after the cameras go off, all the food disappears.

And we don’t know whether they’re being interrogated and to what extent. I agree with what Ollie just said, but I think, unfortunately, that we have to take some of the responsibility for what’s happening now. Once we were released on President Reagan’s inauguration day, as he mentioned, from that point on, for almost 25 years, the U.S. government basically ignored Iran. They got away with what they did to us, and they’ve never paid a price, not a cent for it. The U.S. State Department and Justice Department defended Iran against the former hostages in U.S. federal courts. So it worked once; why not try it again?

HANNITY: Now, Colonel Roeder, I want to ask you specifically here. This is not the first time you have dealt with Ahmadinejad. You were one of the hostages. You were held against your will for a long period of time, but you believe Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, was one of your interrogators back then.

ROEDER: Not the interrogator, but present at several of my interrogations. I was one of the six that identified him when he was announced as the president of Iran. He appeared about the fourth interrogation that I had. And I know, 99.9 percent sure, that this is the same guy. And the reason for that, Sean, is that this man is what I call a blinker. He blinks his eyes more often than an average human being does. And everybody changes in 25, 26 years, but that’s something you can’t change. He’s the same guy.

Opposition group: Iran leaders planned capture of Britons

Opposition group: Iran leaders planned capture of Britons

Iran Focus

London, Mar. 31 – Iran’s main opposition movement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said on Saturday that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) had planned the recent capture of 15 British marines and naval personnel and are holding the group in an effort to gain concessions from the West.

A unit of the IRGC Navy’s 3rd regional command based in Khorramshahr Garrison executed the premeditated operation to capture the Britons on March 23, said Hossein Abedini, a member of the NCRI’s Foreign Affairs Committee, at a press conference in London. He said that the garrison was on a full state of alert.

“Rear Admiral Rashid Hosseini, the commander of the IRGC Navy’s third regional command, personally had command of the operation to arrest the British sailors”, he told reporters.

“A number of IRGC Navy commanders had previously been stationed in Khorramshahr. Colonel Badin was the operational commander based in Khorramshahr at the time of the arrests”.

He gave the names of three IRGC officers – Colonel Majidi, Colonel Abbas-Zadeh, and Colonel Isavi – who were involved in the seizure.

Abedini said that the information he had showed that Rear Admiral Morteza Safari, commander of the IRGC Navy, was in contact with Rear Admiral Hosseini as the operation was taking place. Rear Admiral Safari is one of a number of IRGC commanders who were brought under sanctions under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1747 earlier this month.

A command force comprised of representatives of the ministries of intelligence and foreign affairs in coordination with the IRGC Joint Chiefs of Staff under the direct supervision of the Iran’s Supreme National Security Council is presently following up the case of the sailors, he said.

Abedini said that the NCRI’s information had been smuggled out of Iran by the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), one of the Council’s leading member organisations.

“The clerical regime had in a premeditated act arrested British sailors in order to win concessions from the international community and divert attention from its nuclear projects. Claims that the sailors were arrested in Iranian territorial waters are baseless.

“Taking British sailors as hostages is part of the religious fascism’s policy of exporting terrorism and fundamentalism”.

He said that a “correct policy” regarding Tehran must be comprised of two elements: “On the one hand, all diplomatic and commercial ties with this regime must be cut off and instead comprehensive sanctions must be imposed against it and on the other hand all the obstacles and restrictions on the Iranian opposition must be lifted; in particular the unlawful terror tag must be lifted from the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran”.

“The British government’s refusal over the past three months to implement the verdict of the Court of First Instance of the European Communities insofar as removing the terrorist label from the PMOI has convinced Tehran’s rulers that its breeches of Security Council resolutions and its meddling in Iraq will face no serious response”, he added.

Abedini told reporters that the NCRI had passed on its information to Number 10 Downing Street.

The 15 British sailors and marines were seized at gunpoint earlier this month after they finished a routine search of a merchant ship which London says was in Iraqi waters.

Tehran claims the 14 men and one woman had moved 500 metres into Iranian territorial waters, a claim London denies. The British Ministry of Defence has released global positioning system data as evidence that the group had been more than 2 km outside Iranian waters.

French Fear Islamist Intifada

French Fear Islamist Intifada

Early warning.

French security officials and intelligence experts are seriously concerned about the likelihood of new domestic Muslim uprisings that could see thousands of rioters flooding into Paris from impoverished, no-go Muslim suburbs.

The most immediate concern centers around this June, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Six-Day War that began on June 5, 1967.

Looking ahead, the French are also concerned about the 40th anniversary of the May 1968 student revolt, which grew to include millions of striking workers, split French society, and nearly toppled the government. The students drew on a long revolutionary tradition, building barricades in the same streets that saw them go up in 1848 and 1871.

The next big Islamist intifada, if it occurs, will have nothing in common with those events. The gangsters and clerical fascists will be fighting for the opposite ideals of the revolutionaries of 1848 and the Paris Commune and, for the most part, the revolutionaries and radicals of 1968, for all their flaws and faults. Islamism is clerical fascism, pure and simple.

Ironically, however, the intifada to end all intifadas–the final conflict between Radical Islam and secular French society–will probably have the support of the deformed and dysfunctional French Left. Incredible!

Karl (“Religion-is-the-Opium-of-the-People”) Marx must be rolling in his grave. The worst reactionary rabble–an Islamist indoctrinated and inflamed sub-proletariat–is poised to torch the City of Light.

US Asleep While China Prepares “Assassin’s Mace”

US Asleep While China Prepares “Assassin’s Mace”

No-so-peacefully rising China is actively pursuing an “Assassin’s Mace” (shashoujian) space warfare program–the elusive term refers to an astonishing array of futuristic technologies–while advocating arms control accords aimed at preventing the United States from developing and deploying defensive and offensive space-based weapons.

And the US anti-missile defense crowd is cooperating with the Chinese strategy, effectively playing into the hands of America’s enemies and paving the way for eventual Chinese military dominance of the planet.

We dare to call this perfidy by its real name–treason–for the betrayers and saboteurs of America’s defense are aware of the evidence of China’s space warfare program, but choose to deny or downplay the information.

The amazing thing is just how much of the proof of what China is up to is in the public domain, along with thorough, insightful analyses by American experts. The work of a brilliant US Defense Department consultant, Michael Pillsbury, is a prime example of the latter. He says his concerns that China may decide to develop space weapons for use against the US stem from books written by three Chinese military colonels over the past six years.

The People’s Liberation Army officers advocate the use of secret anti-satellite weapons, without warning, against the US.

“What they are doing in their books is saying that if China faces a hostile United States in the future, we Chinese may need to have some way to deter the United States from either attacking us, or coming to the defense of Taiwan,” Pillsbury tells Voice of America. “If we Chinese ever face that situation, one good way to deter the United States – they use the term “bring America to its knees” – is to have a “shock attack,” or a “shock and awe” attack, to borrow a term we [Americans] used during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, on US-based satellites.”

Pillsbury says the colonels imply that no such system exists in China today. Let’s hope he’s right.

In testimony to the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (commonly called the China Commission) Thursday, Pillsbury said even a small-scale Chinese attack against US satellites could have a catastrophic effect on US military forces and the US economy. He said it is not clear how quickly, if at all, Washingtoncould launch replacement satellites for those that had been incapacitated in orbit by such an attack.

“We could be better prepared, is how I would put it,” he said.

In January, China test fired a ground-based missile that pulverized one of its own satellites. The test was believed to be the first of its kind in two decades by any nation and raised concerns about the vulnerability of US satellites and a possible arms race in space.

Pillsbury’s research is beyond chilling; it is terrifying, despite his reasoned, academic approach to a topic that natrually lends itself to popular exploitation. His in-depth report, commissioned by the China Commission and submitted in January of this year, covering such weapons as high-energy laser guns and orbiting ICBMs capable of striking targets on earth at any time, could inspire a slew of fact-based comic books, novels, movies and TV programs. If only the research would also inspire our so-called leaders to wake up to the looming threat.

Ecerpts from “An Assessment of China’s Anti-Satellite and Space Warfare Programs” appear below:

“Twenty articles and three books published during the target period were selected as significant. From these books and articles, thirty specific recommendations for strategies or specific Chinese space weapons to employ against US vulnerabilities were identified and translated…. The following conclusions may be made from this report:

“While China has publicly assumed a leadership position in international activities to ban space weapons, there is an active group within China not only advocating the weaponization of space but also putting forth specific proposals for implementation of a Chinese space based weapons program.

“The individuals authoring the source works cited herein represent the Chinese space war “hawk” group and may constitute the bulk of it, although the extent to which these proposals are being accepted sympathetically is not known.

“The recommendations cited in this report are courses of action being proposed publicly within China. Common threads of logic and approach, shared assumptions, use of similar expressions in key areas, and the scope of the work represented are indications of collusion among these individuals and possibly of organization.

“There may be covert activity in the development of space weaponry and space warfare plans which is not represented in open source literature, in fact the literature suggests that this might be so.

“Chinese development and deployment of systems and doctrines for space warfare may be partially in response to a perceived US threat, but US resistance to weaponization of space seems irrelevant in the articles cited.

“Chinese attitudes toward weaponization of space have been widely studied by the US, and several models have been proposed, based at least partially on consideration of some of the documents cited in this report. Other than common source material, these models share little and are even contradictory.

“There is an immediate opportunity for diplomatic action to forestall an inappropriate Chinese response to a perceived US threat and to engage elements of the Chinese policy forming community in productive and mutually beneficial confrontation.

“There are profound military preparedness implications associated with Chinese public advocacy of pre-emptive or deterrent attacks on specific US targets, both military and civilian, both independently and in support of theater combat operations.

“This open source literature survey found no assertion that China currently possesses any type of ASAT weapons, or that the government of China has ordered the production of any such weapons. However, an unattributed interview in October 2006 at the Zhuhai air show that appeared in a Chinese owned newspaper bluntly stated China has such weapons now….”

Obama, the cynical poseur

Obama, the cynical poseur

Thomas Lifson
Barack Obama, who poses as an enemy of cynicism, is outdoing even Hillary in his cynical use of lobbyists, as detailed in this article in The Hill, reported by Alexander Bolton.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is benefiting from the support of well-connected Washington lobbyists even though he has prohibited his campaign from accepting contributions from them and political action committees (PACs).

While Obama has decried the influence of special interests in Washington, the reality is that many of the most talented and experienced political operatives in his party are lobbyists, and he needs their help.

Mike Williams, the director of government relations at Credit Suisse Securities, said of the network of lobbyists supporting Obama: “I would imagine that it’s as large as the Clinton list,” in reference to rival presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who is an entrenched favorite of the Washington Democratic establishment.

He said that while lobbyists cannot give money to Obama, they can give “policy” and “campaign support.” Indeed, K Street denizens have rare policy and national campaign expertise.

In other words, Obama wants to reap financial and other rewards from association with big lobbyists, but he doesn’t want anyone to know that he is less than pure on this issue.

Obama’s spokesman Bill Burton said the senator knows that it is impossible to completely escape the influence of Washington’s establishment, but that rejecting lobbyists’ money is an important gesture.

“Senator Obama said when he set out this policy that it doesn’t solve the problem of money in politics but it is a sign and symbolic step in the right direction,” said Burton. “It’s not going to stop the sway that money has over policies or that special interests have over legislation, but it indicates the type of administration Obama would have if elected.”

Gestures and symbolic steps, but somehow or other the money will get to him.

One of the lobbyists, who supports Clinton, said that Shomik Dutta, a fundraiser for Obama’s campaign, called to ask if the lobbyist’s wife would be interested in making a political contribution.

“I was quite taken aback,” he said. “He was very direct in saying that you’re a lobbyist and we don’t want contributions from lobbyists. But your wife can contribute and we like your network.”
