Who is that behind the green card – Aliens?

Who is that behind the green card – Aliens?

Filed under: Military, Politics, BlogBursts/Blog Memes, Illegal Immigration, DHS, Absurd or Outrageous, National Security, Law Enforcement, The PC or Not PC Zone — Toni @ 5:53 pm

From the Counterterrorism Blog we get many questions on the Army translator who faked his identity but received a green card and subsequently American citizenship.  This Arabic translator was working with our Troops to aid and assist in their protection but instead was stealing secret data and maps.

As stated by Michael Cutler this raises numerous troubling questions not only about private contracting firms hired to provide translators for the Military but also the US system of investigating aliens immigrating legally and illegally to our country.  I know with the Visa Express program too many from Saudi Arabia and elsewhere were given visas with literally no information.  I’m guessing that much of this kind of visa processing still exists today.  Visa background checks are a joke.  It sounds like the background check is no different than what would be done if you were applying for a Notary license.  Probably even less information is received since that info is coming from a foreign country.

From Cutler:

It is interesting that the unnamed Justice Department officials who were quoted in the article stated: “The translator obtained U.S. citizenship under a false identity before securing a job in August 2003 with Titan Corp., which supplied translators to the U.S. military to aid in fighting the war in Iraq. The man then used his false identity to get secret and top-secret clearances — access to extremely sensitive material that is supposed to be given only after thorough background checks –…” This is the same sort of statement made when we hear about the way that applications for a wide variety of immigration benefits are vetted, through “background checks.” What is interesting about that term is that a background check is not the same thing as a background investigation.

What I didn’t know was an immigrant can change their name at the time of naturalization for NO EXTRA CHARGE! Then the passport is in their new name.

What will happen when the US has 20 million illegal aliens applying for green cards and “supposedly” citizenship? The level of background investigation is ludicrous and then you add in another 20 million to the mix? Pftttt. There will be no checks on these people.

Our nation remains vulnerable to aliens who would game the immigration system to acquire a “Green Card” and possibly United States citizenship to embed themselves in our country and hide in plain sight as they prepare to carry out criminal and/or terrorist acts against our nation and our citizens!

Read Cutler’s commentary.

The Traitors Ann Coulter is Too Polite to Name

. The Traitors Ann Coulter is Too Polite to NamePeople are still buzzing over Chris Matthews’ attack on Ann Coulter and her book, “Treason: Liberal Treachery From the Cold War to the War on Terrorism.”

The “Hardball” host challenged Coulter to name one traitor in the Democrat party. “I am refusing to turn this into a personality issue,” she answered. “It’s about ideas.”

The left, of course, is adept at making personal attacks instead of talking about ideas, but conservatives are usually afraid to fight back. However, because the public wants names to be named, we’ll point out some offenders that Coulter was too kind to mention.

The undisputable choice for No. 1 Democrat traitor is Bill Clinton.

It’s too bad that so many Americans are uninformed about how Clinton betrayed the U.S. to China, which isn’t the type of thing the pro-Democrat New York Times and its followers in the media establishment like to mention.

Monica Lewinsky was the best thing that ever happened to Slick Willie. The frenzy over his little scandal of adultery and perjury diverted attention from his far more serious crime of treason. (Al Gore claims his burstin’ bladder kept him out of the loop… yeah, right.)

Anyone needing details should go to NewsMax.com and type “Clinton” and “China” or the unfortunate term “Chinagate” in the search engine at the top of the homepage. You’ll have enough reading for a week.

But wait, there’s more. How about:

  • Rep. “Baghdad” Jim McDermott [D-WA] who in September 2002 journeyed to Iraq with fellow travelers Mike Thompson [D-CA] and David Bonior [D-MI] to sabotage President Bush’s foreign policy. Imagine a congressman visiting Berlin in 1940 and sucking up to Adolf Hitler!
  • Sen. Patty “Osama Mama” Murray [D-WA] and her sickening praise of mass-murdering terrorist Osama bin Laden, who, in her freakish fantasy world built “day-care centers” for those liberated career gals of Afghanistan, which “we haven’t done.”
  • Rep. Marcy Kaptur [D-OH] who equated bin Laden’s followers to the patriots of the American Revolution. The list goes on and on. You just need to watch a dose of C-SPAN to see for yourselves the treason and latest outrages of the anti-American left.
  • John Murtha, Traitor

    John Murtha, Traitor

John Murtha’s said some extremely outrageous things the past 6 months but nothing as outrageous as his latest pack of lies. He was barely tolerable when he was hurling lies about conditions on the ground. This latest tripe is the stuff that should get him expelled from the House. Here’s his latest pack of lies:

Rep. John Murtha, an influential Pennsylvania lawmaker and outspoken critic of the war in Iraq, said today Marines had “killed innocent civilians in cold blood” after allegedly responding to a roadside bomb ambush that killed a Marine during a patrol in Haditha, Iraq, Nov. 19. The incident is still under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Multi-National Forces Iraq.
    ———-
“It’s much worse than was reported in Time magazine,” Murtha, a Democrat, former Marine colonel and Vietnam war veteran, told reporters on Capitol Hill. “There was no firefight. There was no [bomb] that killed those innocent people,” Murtha explained, adding there were “about twice as many” Iraqis killed than Time had reported.

Frankly, this is the actions of a traitor or a sellout. He deserves to be ridiculed, excoriated and frog-marched off Capitol Hill, then remanded to jail. No bail. Doesn’t this idiot know the type of damage this inflicts on the Marines? Or is it that he’s so intoxicated with the thought of becoming the next chairman of the House Armed Services Committee that he’ll say anything?

When Murtha’s made prior outrageous statements, I’ve advocated that the Pennsylvania voters should fire him. This goes beyond him advocating “immediate redeployment” of the troops or his claiming that “our troops are living hand to mouth”. This rises (sinks?) to the level of harming the U.S. military at a time of war. That takes it beyond Pennsylvania. Now it’s the nation’s business.

For that reason, I’m asking that the House Ethics Committee start an investigation into Murtha’s actions and that they expel him from the House if he’s found guilty of betraying the soldiers of the U.S.M.C.

    The Marine Response:

“I do not know where Rep. Murtha is obtaining is information,” said Lt. Col. Sean Gibson, a spokesman for Marine Corps Forces Central Command in Tampa, Fla. “Thoroughness will drive the investigation.”

Translation of Col. Gibson’s statement: “I don’t know where Murtha cane up with this BS but it won’t cut it around here. We’ll do the investigation right.”

Mudville Gazette, Hugh Hewitt and Newsbusters have more on the story. This story is about to overshadow the immigration debate. Expect it to be the topic for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE: WOW!!! This has taken off across the right blogosphere. Oliver Willis is ripping me. I’ll wear that as a badge of honor. Blue Crab Boulevard, Beth at Blue Star Chronicles are just a couple of the multitude of blogs hopping on this story.

I predict that this will be the dominant news story for the next week+. Blue Crab Boulevard is joining me in demanding that Murtha either resign or be booted out of the House. I suspect alot of people will be joining us.

    Freedom to Doubt Global Warming

    Freedom to Doubt Global Warming

A questioning attitude, an insistence upon proofs that can replicated, upon data that can be tested are hallmarks of true science.  Man-made global warming is based upon little other than computer models that can deal with only a small number of the interrelated factors that determine climate.

Supporters of the Al Gore hypothesis of man-made global warming resort to power tactics intended to stop debate.  This is scientism, not science.

The TCS Daily website article titled I Want to Demand This Freedom for Future Generations documents some of those strong-arm tactics.  It begins with a quotation from Richard Feynman, the 1965 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics for his work of quantum electrodynamics:

Scientists… are used to dealing with doubt and uncertainty. All scientific knowledge is uncertain. This experience with doubt and uncertainty is important. I believe that it is of very great value, and one that extends beyond the sciences. I believe that to solve any problem that has never been solved before, you have to leave the door to the unknown ajar. You have to permit the possibility that you do not have it exactly right. Otherwise, if you have made up your mind already, you might not solve it.

With the recent publication of the IPCC report’s summary (written by politicians, not scientists), Congress seems poised to pursue extreme measures such as the Koyoto Protocols demanded by “greenhouse gas” true believers.  But the dogmatic certainty projected by Mr. Gore’s sympathizers doesn’t even come close to the scientific respect for uncertainty postulated by Professor Feynman.

There are many discrepancies between the predictions based on the “greenhouse gas” hypothesis and historical experience, both recent and over eons past.  Moreover, while some parts of the globe have become warmer in recent years, other parts have become much colder.  For example, the Danish meteorologists who have the most extensive data base of observations of glaciers in Greenland, tell us that while some glaciers may be calving at a faster rate, the inland snowfall that feeds the glaciers is running at a faster rate than normal.  There are similar discrepancies in the polar ice caps and elsewhere.

All of which is to say that what is needed is a free and open discussion based on verifiable evidence.  So far the public have been given little other than one-sided, self-interestd propaganda from the left-wing press, which ardently promotes any cause that might lead to a one-world government of socialistic regulation by elite councils.

A proud Israeli Bedouin questions American-Jewish apathy

    by Ismail Khald

Two years ago, a few proud Bedouin Israeli citizens like myself asked: what is our position and status in the State of Israel in the midst of its current situation? After all, Bedouins are part of Israel’s success story. During current times, when Israel is being attacked and accused of being a racist state, an ‘aggressor and an oppressor’, we decided that the smallest and probably most effective thing we could do is to spread our story as part of Israeli society.

I, Ishmael Khaldi, am Israeli. I served with the IDF, with the Israel police, and with the Israeli Defense Ministry. In the last year, I have lost two Bedouin friends on army duty (God bless their memory) defending the State of Israel. My friends and family feel that we have a common destiny with the Jewish people in Israel: our grandparents created this land with Jewish immigrants who arrived during the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s to build a democracy.

Because of this connection to the State of Israel, I cannot stand on the sidelines during Israel’s time of need. I feel that I must speak up and be heard.

I recently returned from a two-month campus speaking tour in North America, mostly organized by Hasbara Fellowships. This was the fourth tour I had done over the past year. I’ve traveled the United States coast to coast (of course, being a Bedouin nomad, I mainly took Greyhound!) and flew for a ten-day tour across Canada.

The tour was certainly miraculous — a Bedouin shepherd who had never been to any major city before, all of sudden found himself in downtown Manhattan! It proved to be one of the most adventurous, challenging and enriching experiences of my life.

I came to the U.S. and Canada to speak on college campuses about Israel, as one who certainly holds a perspective that is rarely heard — a proud Israeli that is not Jewish. I came to share one man’s tale of Israel’s culture, society and politics from the perspective of a Bedouin minority in the Jewish State.

Arriving in North America, committed to defending Israel from the poisonous venom of hatred and attacks that I had heard much about, I expected to see the same commitment on campuses among the Jewish students. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case.

I had heard much about the struggle of pro-Israel student activists, attempting to counter the unbalanced, biased and false accusations made against Israel. I had not come to North America to preach that Israel was perfect. As all Israelis know, Israel has problems like all nations of the world. Still, many students tried to stop me from speaking. There were even students who had the audacity to compare me to Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, making false claims that I was doing the same for Israel.

The United States has always been described as being the ‘land of the free’ and a home for free speech. How can New Hampshire’s slogan read, “live free or die” if the student union is allowed to ban me from telling a cultural story? I can’t believe that the hatred for Israel is so strong that student governments are able to defy their own dignity as free American citizens, in order that the truth about Israel should remain a secret.

The deep-seated hatred manifested itself clearly throughout the country with the many loaded questions asked by anti-Israel students. For example, a Muslim student at Rutgers University completely ignored the fact that Israel is a free state and asked, “How could you support a Hebrew state if you’re not Jewish?” Another questioner asked, “Don’t you think that if Israel didn’t exist, then the Palestinians wouldn’t have any problems?”

In Milwaukee, I was asked, “How many Palestinian old men and women have you humiliated while serving in the Israeli police?” How can such a question be asked? Only if the truth were known, that Israeli soldiers have on many occasions helped Palestinians.

The situation I encountered on many of the campuses in North America and Canada was horrifying. I was not as shocked by the Arab questioners as I was with the personal threats, and the severe apathy of the majority of Jewish students.

In my years of speaking to people, I’ve never received threats or personal attacks like I did speaking on campuses. There were threatening incidents at both the University of Florida and at California State University. Both were chilling. The crowd in Florida was one full of anger and hatred, yet I had to stand before them unsure of the enemy who had sent threats earlier that day. In California I spoke facing a young student who wore a T-shirt with a swastika on it, chewing on a piece of paper as some sort of protest against! m! y talk.

Even more upsetting, I expected to see many more Jewish students aware of the situation in Israel, but that wasn’t the case. I expected the Jewish students to realize that the situation was not only affecting Israel and Israelis, but Jews all over the world.

On the other hand, the Arab students and their supporters knew almost all the last minute news clips from the Middle East. How can Israel’s voice be heard if the Jewish students don’t have the facts or the knowledge to speak up? I don’t take the mass of Jewish students to task for not agreeing with all of Israel’s policies, but I do take them to task for not caring about Israel or what happens there. It is the apathy which allows the anti-Israel propaganda to strengthen itself more and more over time.

As a personal aside, sixty years after the horrors of the Holocaust, Israel is going through one of the most critical times in its history. More than 60 years after my grandparents joined their destiny to that of the Jews coming to the Land of Israel, I feel that history is somehow moving backwards. Anti-Semitism and hatred towards Israel is soaring. Comparing me, a Muslim Bedouin who supports Israel, to the Nazis is just another clear piece of evidence.

And yet, 60 years after the horrors of the Holocaust, I felt that on campus, the Jewish voice is silent. Where are the Jewish students fighting back? My commitment in these crucial days, while Israel is struggling for its right to exist, is to continue the heritage of my grandparents and to stand together to fight for the State of Israel.

History will not tolerate us if we keep our voice silent. We must roll up our sleeves once again to build a better future for Israel and all of its loyal citizens. Israel’s right to exist is my right and my people’s right, just as Israel’s destiny is our destiny.

But just as history demands for me to fight for Israel, history also will not tolerate a generation of Jews who don’t care.

    Cracks in Saudi-US relations

    Cracks in Saudi-US relations

    By Ted Belman

A few days ago I reported Saudi Arabia stabs US in the back and referred to the Mecca Accords. I am happy to see that US has put the kibosh on the deal, because it doesn’t recognize Israel and Congress has put the kibosh on the $86 million promised to Abbas.

But one word of complaint. The reason given for rejecting the accord is tantamount to tolerating the terror and arming of terrorists. Until they insist in the dismantling of the terror structure, they aren’t serious.

    Now,

DEBKAfile reports Saudis to purchase nuclear option, advanced missiles and spy satellites off the shelf from Pakistan and Russia

Moscow will assist in Saudi development of a civilian nuclear program and build six “research satellites” for the oil kingdom. DEBKAfile’s Gulf intelligence sources report this was agreed in the Putin-Abdullah talks held in Riyadh earlier this week. Vladimir Putin and King Abdullah. Israeli military sources report that Moscow in fact undertook to provide Saudi Arabia with half a dozen military surveillance satellites, launch them and set up ground control centers.

DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s sources also revealed last month that Musharraf had contracted to make nuclear weapons available to Riyadh in a nuclear emergency.

    What gives here.

Utah killer’s father was in Bosnian Muslim army

    Serbianna.com

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina-The Bosnian teen who killed five shoppers at a Salt Lake City mall fled the war in his homeland at age 10, neighbors and friends said Wednesday.

Sulejman Talovic, an 18-year-old immigrant fatally shot by police after Monday’s rampage, was only 4 when he and his mother fled their village of Talovici on foot after Serbian forces overran it in 1993, people close to the family told The Associated Press.

Talovic lived as a refugee in Bosnia from 1993 to 1998, when his family moved to the United States, they said.

During that period, he spent some time in Srebrenica. Before being captured vy Serb forces, Srebrenica was used by Bosnian Muslims to massacre all the Serbs in all of the nearby villages only for themselves to be captured in the fall of the town.

The teen gunman left Srebrenica two years before the massacre, but acquaintances suggested it may have left an indelible mark on the quiet little boy they knew.

“That’s why I’m convinced the war did this in Utah,” said Murat Avdic, a friend of the family. “There cannot be any other reason.”

Avdic, 54, said that when the village of Talovici fell, the family split.

“Sulejman and his mother walked to Srebrenica, and from there were later evacuated by a U.N. convoy,” he said.

“Suljo, the father, headed over the mountains and forests with his comrades as well. Many left the village, but only a few made it.”

Avdic described the family as “very normal, very decent and quiet.”

A 1995 peace agreement ended the war but left their native Talovici in the Serb-controlled half of the country to which the family did not dare return.

“We know they ended up in the United States. We never saw them again. It was a wonderful family,” said Zijad Cerkic, 33, the family’s next-door neighbor in government-controlled Tuzla.

Apart from eight elderly returnees, Talovici village has been a virtual ghost town since 1993. All but two houses are in ruins, including the home of Sulejman’s family, said former neighbor Adem Huric, 38.

Many mujahedeen from Muslim states came in Bosnia to fight in 1992-95 war and committed monstruous atrocities againsy Serb civilians.

Liberals Should Chew and Try to Digest

Liberals Should Chew and Try to Digest

Liberals repeat ad nauseam the campaign mantra about “Bush tax cuts for the rich.” The facts don’t match that picture.

Wall Street Journal columnist David Wessel observes what liberal-progressive-socialists can’t grasp: the economy isn’t a static “thing” that can be carved up and apportioned in accord with “social justice” to make us all equally poor.  As in physics, for every action, there is a reaction.  Results are counterintuitive.

Liberals ignore it, but the rich pay almost all of the income taxes, while the bottom half of taxpayers pay very little of them.  Moreover, the administration’s tax cuts changed the distribution of wealth and taxes almost not at all.

For those who are not paid subscribers to the Wall Street Journal’s online publication, the following are some of Mr. Wessel’s points.

FACT ONE: Federal taxes make the distribution of income more equal, even after the Bush tax cuts. Taxes don’t undo all market forces pushing income toward the top—and there are good reasons they shouldn’t. Before taxes, the bottom 40% of U.S. households got 13% of the nation’s income in 2004; after federal taxes of all sorts they got about 15%, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s latest estimates. Because of the Earned Income Tax Credit, a cash bonus the government offers low-wage workers, many Americans at the bottom get money from the government, rather than having to pay income taxes; they still face payroll taxes on their wages.
Before taxes, the top 1% got about 16% of income; after taxes they ended up with 14%. (Yes, you read that right: The 1.2 million best-off households got about as much income, even after taxes, as the 45.5 million worst-off.) That top 1%, by the way, pays about a quarter of all federal taxes.

CBO estimates aren’t perfect, but they represent the best available attempt to combine Census Bureau and Internal Revenue Service data to get a comprehensive picture of who pays taxes.

FACT TWO: The Treasury benefits more when CEOs get bigger raises than when ordinary workers gain, and that, along with the buoyant economy, is a big reason for today’s surge in federal revenue.

It’s simple: Taking all federal taxes into account—including payroll as well as income taxes, and allocating corporate profits and taxes paid on them to those who hold shares—the CBO says those in the bottom fifth pay an average of $4.50 in taxes for every $100 they take in. Those in the top 1% pay $31.10 in taxes for every $100 they take in.

FACT THREE: The Bush tax cuts reduced income-tax rates across the spectrum. Some saved a lot more dollars than others—namely, the ones who make a lot of money. But, strangely, the percentage of taxes paid by different groups hasn’t changed very much.

Consider this calculation by James Poterba, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist: If the Bush tax cuts had never happened, and President Bill Clinton’s tax rates were applied to the 2004 economy, American households would have paid about 3% more of their income in taxes. (Mr. Poterba quickly adds that people would have behaved differently had taxes remained at Clinton levels. They would have sold fewer shares of stock, for instance, because capital-gains tax rates would have been higher. That means the 3% estimate overstates the actual effect somewhat.)

But Mr. Bush did cut taxes. So, Mr. Poterba looks at how that smaller tax bill was sliced—what percentage was paid by the best-off 1%, by the middle class, etc. It turns out the share of the income-tax tab actually picked up by each group in 2004 is close to what it would have been had Mr. Bush’s tax never happened. The CBO numbers show the same thing: The top 1% paid 25.5% of all federal taxes under Mr. Clinton’s tax rates and 25.3% under Mr. Bush’s.

How can that be? Clearly the well-off saved many bucks. For one thing, tax rates were cut for the bottom and middle as well as the top, a fact often lost in public debate over taxes on the rich. Second, there’s so little income earned and so little tax paid at the bottom that a tax cut of $100 is a big change in the taxes that group pays, and conversely at the top.

FACT FOUR: Rising spending on government retirement and health benefits almost surely will force tax increases in the next decade or so; the issue is who will be taxed.

We are at a tipping point. We must act, and act swiftly … Such action requires international cooperation.

This was Al Gore on February 3rd, gloating over the 46 nations–most of them European–that backed a new French-led environmental body to save us from global warming. Did you honestly think it was about combating terrorism?
Unless stuck in a cave or flying around in one of Barbra Streisand’s private planes the past few weeks, one couldn’t help but hear that “warming” is approaching us faster than ever.
We have now been blamed for creating it, and according to those who attended that enthusiastic conference in Paris, it is “unstoppable.” So, if you were saving your alarmist concerns about the Jihad in Western Europe, America, Israel or elsewhere, forget about it; Al Gore was right and you were wrong. And soon he’ll have the Nobel “Peace” Prize and Oscar to prove it.
From the AP and the BBC to Brian Williams and Energy Czaress Barbara Boxer, Global Warming–along with Scooter Libby updates–is the intangible enemy we must fear. He, she or it is the news that should matter to us, they think.
That established, as I look out my window in Indianapolis, I should forget about the snow falling and tonight’s temps being five below; that’s just a passing trend. After all, a friend recently e-mailed me an LA Times article saying that we will have freezing winters before the real “climate change” occurs that wipes out the world. Either way, the Ad Council and others are pulling out all the stops right now, from movies and political statements to children going “tick, tick” like a clock in an advertisement for fightglobalwarming.com. Believe it or be accused of doubting science.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the end of the world some thousand generations from now–a natural phenomenon that began in the Ice Age became a clever political tool of the left to divide this country along the electoral campaign trail these next 21 months.
Whether it’s Rolling Stone lionizing Gore for becoming the first “environmental” candidate or “grassroots” bloggers begging Uncle Al to get revenge for 2000 in 2008, these publicity hounds forgot to check their common sense and their personal lives first.
Rises in temperature are natural over time, and there is no qualitative evidence that the US has more culpability in this “disaster” than other nations. In fact, despite being criticized for ignoring this imminent threat, the Bush Administration should be commended for judiciously not signing the Kyoto Protocol a few years back (or this most recent effort), as these flawed documents fail to cover the world’s biggest polluters: China, India, Brazil and many others.
And then there is the hypocrisy. The most fervent critics of our policies are typically the folks that are far too important to practice what they preach.
“Enviros” like Laurie David, Ted Kennedy and Babs will whine and kvetch until they can hate America no more, yet ask them to close down the 12,000 square foot air-conditioned barns at their Malibu estates or install electricity-generating wind turbines along their sailing route on Nantucket Sound and expect a tongue-lashing. John Edwards, the populist who incessantly rants about “Two Americas” is having a 30,000 square foot house built for him. Apparently, this is more of that do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do liberal doublespeak that Michael Moore employs while he flies his jets to the mansions he financed with Halliburton stock.
If Americans paid more attention to the personal duplicity of folks with purely ideological agendas, we’d be better off. As it is, we’re using our beautiful country’s natural atmosphere to be as divisive as we can and ignore the inherent threat of terrorism that is as real as ever.
But I’m sure that the aforementioned millionaires have spent a lot of time researching this issue, traveling to a dozen national parks in the past year and writing a book about it (like I did) before spewing their balderdash. At least Gore did some research. Then again, his documentary ends by filming Al jumping into his private jet. I hope it uses “environmentally sensitive fuel,” though.
In a June 2006 article, Dennis Prager wrote,

“People who don’t confront the greatest evils will confront far lesser ones…One day, our grandchildren may ask us what we did when Islamic fascism threatened the free world. Some of us will say we were preoccupied with fighting that threat wherever possible; others will be able to say they fought carbon dioxide emissions. One of us will look bad.”

    Perfectly put. Enough said.

Hillary Clinton Buying Black Vote for $200,000

    By NewsMax.com
    Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007 1:19 p.m. EST

The press reported on Tuesday that Sen. Hillary Clinton had scored a coup in the presidential race by winning the endorsement of a key black political leader in South Carolina, state Sen. Darrell Jackson.

Now it has come to light that just days earlier, Clinton’s campaign reached a deal to pay Jackson’s consulting firm $10,000 a month through the 2008 elections – a deal worth more than $200,000.

“Jackson had also been in talks with Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign about endorsing him and entering into a consulting contract for more than $5,000, sources said – raising questions about whether Jackson’s endorsement was bought by a higher bidder,” the New York Post reported.

Jackson – who is also the minister of a large church in the state capital, Columbia – acknowledged that he should have revealed his financial dealings with the Clinton campaign when he and fellow state Sen. Robert Ford, who is also African-American, endorsed Clinton.

But he told the Post: “It’s not about the money – there were some other candidates who offered to double [Clinton’s] offer,” Jackson told the Post, although he declined to name them.

Support from black voters is key in South Carolina, where 49 percent of the Democratic presidential primary vote came from blacks in 2004. The state will host the first Southern primaries for both the Democrats and the GOP in 2008.
