For their part Muslims could not contain their glee at the blissful submission displayed by public officials and saw their public acknowledgement of Islam and regarded it as the first step before conversion. “For the first time, members of four area mosques welcomed Iowans to “join in the making of history and get a taste of what it feels to be a Muslim.” Emboldened by sucess Iowa Muslims quickly announced their own mayoral candidate and Sol Mohammed wrote in the Iowa Muslim newsletter that: In addition to the dhimmitude of local politicians Iowa Muslims have been exploiting taxpayer funding and state and federally funded institutions to promote their political, social and educational Jihad. An example of the degree to which Muslims are attempting to main stream Islamism in Iowa can be seen in the fact that The 1st conference of the Islamic Foundation of Iowa did not take place in a mosque, but was held at at the taxpayer funded Central Middle School in Waterloo Iowa, despite having being a religious gathering with unmistakeably Islamo supremacist agenda : “The practical structure of building an Islamic society -Come to know the future visions and plans for Muslims in Iowa.” In 2003 a Reza Aslan, then a visiting professor at Iowa U, and a stealth Islamist, overtly declared that Muslims felt more loyalty towards the Umma (the worldwide community) then the United States: “As a Muslim American, you belong to two communities,” said Aslan, who often takes the role of spokesman for Iowa Muslims. “Your first allegiance is as an American citizen. This type of ‘cultural Jihad’ can prove more effective in destroying America through the physical Jihad of terrorist attacks. As Muslim Brotherhood founder Sheik Yusuf Qaradawi pointed out in 1995: ‘ America will not be conquered by the sword – but by da’wa’. Al Qawadawi ’s prediction is coming to fruition in Iowa. A case in point is the recent formation of a Ceder Rapids branch of the Muslim American Society, a group whose plans for America are in it’s name. The group made their announcement at a library and the Mayor, Kay Halloran, welcomed the Al Qaeda linked group with open arms: “I want everyone to know how happy I am this organization has chosen Cedar Rapids as its home,” she said during the ceremony. “We are honored and delighted to have you with us.” For their part the MAS director made it clear that Iowa was on the fast track to becoming part of the Umma and the first state in their goal of a Muslim American Society: It’s a perfect time to introduce the Muslim American Society to the state of Iowa,” said Cedar Rapids resident Mohamad Elmasry, executive director and director of media relations for the new chapter. “We hope that our comprehensive services will be assets to Iowa’s Muslim community and the Iowa community at large.” http://www.masnet.org/masnews.asp?id=3248 In Iowa Saudi funded groups like MAS which register as non profits, need only pay a nominal custodial fee in order to use public premises like schools, universities and libraries. This is a great boom for da’wa since these venues will enable them to attract non Muslims, who are already using the facilities and will be lured to a lecture about Islam under the pretence of broadening their ‘cultural awareness’. It is no coincidence that the former president of the Islamic Center of Des Moines, Ako Ahmed Abdul Samad is a member of the Des Moines school board and is trying to move from a a civil service post to infiltrate the state government by running for state representative in order to push an Islamist agenda and gain more ground for Muslims both by pushing for Muslim interests and propagating Islam under the guise of multi culturalism and diversity. In 1995 Dr. Daniel Pipes explained the threat posed by militant Islam “Unnoticed by most Westerners, war has been unilaterally declared on Europe and the United States”. More then a decade later the template for Jihad being waged in the U.S. can be seen in the case Iowa, where radical Islamists are in the process of turning one America’s heartland into the first Islamic state. The Frankish Empire Strikes Back

The European Union would have you believe it’s the latest sign of progressive humanity, a peaceful and prosperous socialist union where previously only war and discord used to reign. Skeptics might point out that the EU is basically a revived Frankish Empire (5th-10th century CE), an attempt to unify Germany and France in an effort to control all of Europe.

With the return of the dark side of the European psyche after fifty years, the biggest rationale for the EU is fear of its own people, who are thought to be closet Nazis by the leftist elites. When an Israeli soccer team won a game against a French team several weeks ago, Israeli fans were chased through the streets by a more than a hundred French football hooligans.  Yet the Leftist elites of Europe might be inviting a self-fulfilling prophecy; suppress the democratic Right long enough, and in the face of Islamofascist waves of immigrants the voters might look for a strong man again.

Daniel Hannan is a Euroskeptic conservative who is a Member of the (powerless) European Parliament. Hannan argues for actual elections to determine the future of Europe, as if the voters have any say over the matter. When the European Constitution was defeated two years ago by referenda in France and Holland, he predicted that the vote would make no real difference. The Eurobureaucracy is on the march and will force through the EU Constitution by decree.

Hannan now writes:

…the EU will continue to adopt as many of the Constitution’s proposals as it can … . It has, after all, already enacted the document’s chief provisions: a European criminal justice system, a diplomatic corps (the “European External Action Service”) the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Some 85 per cent of the clauses can be pushed through this way. Then, at some stage in the next 18 months, there will be a perfunctory Inter-Governmental Conference to tie up the loose ends: … . There will be no disagreement in principle about these things, which the 25 – now, with Romania and Bulgaria, 27 – governments have accepted in principle all along. The national leaders will then tell their electorates that it would be absurd to hold referendums on such detailed and technical proposals. The result? We will end up with virtually the entire text of the constitution, but with no more referendums.

Europe is desperately trying to escape its past. Poland has just vetoed an outreach to Russia for fear of newly aggressive moves from the Bear to the East.  l Eastern Europe doesn’t trust the German Wolf either, as benign as it looks today. Europeans are still neurotically entangled in the past, no matter how glorious the EU proclaims itself to be. For them, the EU is a desperate effort to make the future work.

The constant Europropaganda against America and Israel must be seen in this framework. Ultimately all politics are local, and in this case, it is Europe’s neurosis that needs to be soothed by hating America and Israel. That is how European political movements have always worked, by finding an external enemy to take the blame. America and the Jews are especially useful, because nobody is really afraid of them. No such hatred is directed to the Russians, because everybody understands that Putin will take revenge against his critics. 

When Ronald Reagan helped bring down the Berlin Wall, leading to the unification of Germany, Margaret Thatcher was passionately opposed. She was and is so steeped in Europe’s turbulent history that German unification seemed to bode nothing but a return to the past. We still don’t know who was  right.

Angela Merkel, the well-meaning German Chancellor at the moment, has just raised the possibility of a free trade agreement between the EU and the US.   It could be a very constructive idea, on the principle that trade breeds tolerance as well as prosperity. The United States has two hundred years of solid democratic governance. Europe has much less, with many more grand failures. Bringing down EU-US trade barriers could benefit the cause of peace and stability, and ultimately the cause of freedom and democracy.
But don’t expect the path to be straight and narrow. The Frankish Empire has its own ambitions and fears, and it has always followed its self-interest first.

While white South Africans fled Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban for either suburban security complexes or foreign shores in the mid-1990s, experts said whites in London and cities like Birmingham and Bradford were fleeing to rural “market towns” – and, increasingly, abroad.

In his seemingly xenophobic book, Time to Emigrate? George Walden, who was education minister under Margaret Thatcher, had no doubt about the cause. Immigration had created “unacceptable” terrorist and crime risks, and had doomed British culture .

“They differed with me over what times we are living in. It is not a democracy when a man can talk about politics without anyone threatening him.  Democracy is when a woman can talk of her lover without anyone killing her.” –  Dr. Sauad M. Al-Sabah I am a Moslem woman. I have no face. I have no identity. At age 9, based on lunar year (a lunar year is ten days shorter) I am considered an adult. Being an adult means that I have to adhere with Islamic laws as stated below. I have to pray five times a day, fast one month out of the year and cover myself from head to toe in yards of black fabric. I am eligible to be married and can be punished for any wrong doing. I can be incarcerated and, if needed, executed for my crimes, even political ones. Islam’s law – that Allah sent down to his messenger Muhammad – came to announce that women (exactly like men) are full human beings. Women (like men) are therefore required to follow the way appointed by Allah. “A woman (like a man) is therefore obligated with all three degrees of this religion: Islam (outward submission to Allah), iman (inward faith in Allah), and ihsan (perfection of worship of Allah)”. “Women have such honorable rights as obligations, but men have a (single) degree above them”. The Koran 2:228 “Men are the managers of the affairs of women because Allah has preferred men over women and women were expended of their Rights”. The Koran 4:34 Islam believes and promotes only one relationship between male and female and that is the relation of lust. “If a man and a woman are alone in one place, the third person present is the devil”. Prophet Mohammed I am not allowed to swim, ski, ride a bike, dance, learn to play musical instruments, practice gymnastics, or any other sport. I am not even permitted to watch men play sports, either in the stadium and/or on television. I am not permitted to participate in Olympic games. From age 7, I am segregated from all males in and out of my extended family. My father, grandfather, uncles, brothers or my male cousins are not allowed to be present at any ceremonies for my accomplishments. They will not be allowed to participate in my birthday parties. I have to study under female teachers and professors. However, since women of prior generations were not allowed to go to school, there are not that many qualified women teachers and professors. Male professors must teach me from behind a wall. I am to be treated by female doctors. Go to female dentists. And if there are none, then I have to go without or I must be examined through some sort of divider. I am not allowed to practice birth control or have abortions, even if carrying or having a child means I have to die. My worth is based on the Islamic Laws of Retribution, 24th edition, December 1982, as half of a man. It doesn’t matter who I am, how educated I am, and what earning potential I may have in my life. My worth is half of a man, any man. According to clauses 33 and 91 of the law in respect, Qasas (The Islamic Retribution Bill) and its boundaries, the value of woman is considered only half as much as the value of a man. Article 1: dieh or blood money paid to the victim or next of kin for as compensation for bodily injury or murder of a relative. The Islamic Law of Retribution In the old Islamic laws, recently placed into practice by the Islamic Republic of Iran, the worth of a man’s life is equal to the market value of 100 camels or 200 cows and that of a woman is equal to half of the man’s, 50 camels or 100 cows. The clause number 6 regarding the dieh (cash value of the fine) states that the cash fine for murdering a woman intentionally or unintentionally is half as much as for a man. The same clause adds that if a man intentionally murders a woman and the guardian of the woman himself is not able to pay half of the Dieh (the value of 50 camels or 100 cows, the difference between the value of a man to that of a woman’s life) to the murderer, the murderer will be exempted from retribution. New Legal Standing: Pursuant to article 85 of the constitution, the Islamic penal code article 300, blood money or dieh, a sum paid to the next of kin as compensation for the murder of a relative, is twice as much in the case of a murdered man as in the case of a woman. The number of witnesses required to prove a crime is higher if the witnesses are female. For example, article 237 of the penal code states that first degree murder must be proven by testimony of two just men and evidence for second-degree murder or manslaughter requires the testimony of two just men, or one just man and two just women, or of one just man and the accuser. My testimony in a court of law is equal to half of that of a man. In most countries I don’t vote and I don’t get elected to office. And if I do, it does not mean much. I inherit only half as much as my male siblings. I cannot get custody of my children. Even if their father dies. In the case of divorce or death I have to surrender my children to their father and/or his family. I cannot travel, work, go to college, join organizations, even visit my friends and relatives without my father or husband’s permission. I must live where my husband desires. I am banned from studies such as engineering, agriculture, archaeology, restoration of the historic monuments and handicrafts, and many other fields. I am not allowed to become a judge. Under the terms of Koranic law, any judge fulfilling the seven requirements (that he have reached puberty, be a believer, know the Koranic laws perfectly, be just, and not be affected by amnesia, or be a bastard, or be of the female sex) is qualified to dispense justice in any type of case. I have no right to choose the clothing I wear in public. This is done by the Office of the Islamic Guidance which sets the color, the style, and the accessories for women and girls as young as 6 years of age. I will get arrested, beaten, and sometimes even executed if I wear make-up, nylons, bright colors and specifically the color of red. I cannot choose my mate and am not permitted to divorce him if things did not work out. According to Khomeini, the Iranian Islamic Imam, “The most suitable time for a girl to get married is the time when the girl can have her first menstrual period in her husband’s house rather than her father’s”. I have to meet all my husband’s desires including the sexual ones. And if I refuse he has the right to deny me food, shelter, and all of life’s necessities. I have to say yes every time he wants to have sex. According to Hojatoleslam Imani, Religious Leader in Iran. “A woman should endure any violence or torture imposed on her by her husband for she is fully at his disposal. Without his permission she may not leave her house even for a good action (such as charitable work). Otherwise her prayers and devotions will not be accepted by God and curses of heaven and earth will fall upon her”. My husband can divorce me without my knowledge and by the Islamic law he is required to support me for only 100 days. And if he dies, I am entitled to 1/8 of his Estate. I can only ask for divorce if my husband is impotent, if he does not have sex with me at least one night in every forty nights, and if he refuses to provide me with a minimum standard of living. My husband can have four permanent wives and if he is from Shi’i sect, he can have as many temporary wives as he wants. Koran says that “Men your wives are your tillage. Go into your tillage anyway you want”. This means that a man is allowed to sodomise his wife and she cannot complain. In some countries they even mutilate, cut and sew my female sexual parts in order to control and regulate my sexual desire. According to the Islamic Laws, I am supposed to be seen outside of my home three times in my life. When I am born, when I get married and when I die. I have no explanation on why God denied me everything and made men in charge of me, if there is a God. I don’t believe there ever was one. In Islam, the age of majority for a girl is 9 years and for a boy is 15 years. This means that a 9 year old girl and a 15 year old boy are considered to have the same level of maturity. Now, if girls reach maturity six years earlier than boys, then why did God place men in charge of women? Was there something wrong with God’s Judgment? In some Islamic countries such as Iran, if I am arrested for wearing make-up, the guards will force me to clean my face with cotton balls rubbed in pieces of glass. This cuts my face. The barbaric revolutionary guard, while watching the blood run out of my flesh, will tell me, “next time you think about this and will not wear it”. As a political prisoner I will be used as a concubine for the revolutionary guards. In case I am condemned to death I will not undergo the sentence as long as I am a virgin. Thus I will be systematically raped before the sentence is executed. Mullahs believe that virgin girls who die go to heaven but politically inclined girls are ungodly creatures and they do not deserve to go to heaven, therefore they are raped so that the Mullah’s can be sure that they indeed will be sent to hell. In Islam, if a 6 or 7 year old girl is raped by an adult man, she will be the one that gets punished. It is her fault because she provoked it. The parents then will burn or kill her because she has dishonored the family. It has been said that the Moslem Prophet got very upset one day noticing his wives flirting with men who visited him and ordered women to stay behind a dividing curtain when speaking with men. The idea of hijab, the covering up of women, became a law in Islamic countries from that day. In 1991, the Prosecutor-General of Iran, declared that “anyone who rejects the principle of hijab is an apostate and the punishment for an apostate under Islamic law is death.” Polygamy is legal in Islam. A man may marry “four Permanent” and as many “Provisional” or temporary wives as he desires. “Marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own; so it is likelier you will not be partial”. Eventually, the official gave up trying to oppose the controversial change. “Change this heathen’s religion and make him go away,” the devout Muslim told his clerks. More than ten years later, the missionary zeal of Mr Tastan and his fellow Christian convert, Turan Topal, has led to much graver things than being called names. They face up to nine years’ jail after going on trial last week for “insulting Turkishness” during their religious work, under the notorious Article 301 of the Turkish penal code. It is the same law that put Orhan Pamuk, the Nobel literature laureate, in the dock, and which the European Union wants amended. The case against two members of the tiny Turkish Protestant community has attracted criticism from the EUand cast a shadow over Pope Benedict XVI’s visit this week. Mr Topal and Mr Tastan, who are charged with illegally gathering information on people and “insulting Islam”, have faced public anger in Turkey, where a mistrust of Christians has been growing, fuelled by the Iraq war, the EU’s critical attitude, the Pope’s comments linking Islam with violence and the Danish cartoons row. At last week’s hearing, a friend was punched and bystanders told them to leave the country if they didn’t like it. “Where are we supposed to go? We are Turkish. I am a patriot. I hang out the Turkish flag on national days and have a picture of Atatürk (the founder of modern Turkey) in my office,” says Mr Tastan, 37. “There is a lot of misunderstanding about us here,” said Mr Topal, 45. “They think that missionary work is part of a foreign-financed effort to split the country.” Turkey is home to about 100,000 Christians, most from ethnic communities such as Greek Orthodox, Armenians and Syriac Christians, whose status is legally defined. For Turkish Protestants, a community of about 4,000, that came into existence 20 years ago, there is no recognisable role. Mr Topal was one of the first converts 17 years ago. Mr Tastan, the son of an atheist and grandson of an Alevi Muslim, said that he read the Koran and then was given the Bible by a friend. He converted during his mandatory military service. The pair and their lawyer, Haydar Polat, think that their indictment is part of a plot. They have this idea that we are rich and get a lot of money from abroad,” Among the accusing lawyers is Kemal Kerincsiz, an ultra- nationalist campaigner behind many of the high-profile 301 trials that have embarrassed the Turkish Government. Jatras sounds a warning: It is certainly no surprise that “Sharia law is spreading as authority wanes” in Britain, as reported in The Telegraph (UK) of 29 November. All the signs of this eventuality were there. Are we ignoring those same signs in this country?Today in Britain there are more practicing Muslims than there are practicing Anglicans, the religion that saw Britain through two world wars. English history and culture are slowly disappearing. The Observer of 4 November 2001 reported a statement by Omar Bakri, the jihad leader formerly based in Britain: “We will replace the Bible with the Koran.” A demonstration held outside of British Parliament some years ago carried signs that read, “Islam. Our religion today, your religion tomorrow.” Banks in Britain no longer give out piggy banks to customers for fear of offending the Muslim community. Melanie Phillips provides harrowing details of the transformation of Britain in her book Londonistan, about which jihad expert Steve Emerson writes, “Londonistan is one of the most compelling books you will ever read on the ascendancy of Islamic fundamentalism, violence and intimidation in the West.” Islam has been further spread in Britain with the help of Bonnie Prince Charlie, who has introduced more Islamic studies into their schools. This is ironic, since Queen Elizabeth and her heirs have the title “Defender of the Faith,” i.e., Anglicanism. In his commentary, “Is Prince Charles a Convert to Islam?,” Daniel Pipes writes, “In a 1997 Middle East Quarterly article titled ‘Prince Charles of Arabia,’ Ronni L. Gordon and David M. Stillman looked at evidence that Britain’s Prince Charles might be a secret convert to Islam.” They found a good deal in that evidence that was compelling. It appears that the metamorphosis from Christianity to Islam in Britain is happening quickly — faster than anyone could ever have imagined. Some historical background can be found in Robert Spencer’s book entitled The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades), which is an excellent account of what we should know about Islam and what we face as Christians. Chapter nine of the book is entitled, “Islam–Spread by the Sword? You Bet.” To that I say, “Why do you think there is a sword on the flag of Saudi Arabia?” The renowned historian Bat Ye’or has also written extensively on the transformation of non-Muslim societies into Islamic societies. Her book The Decline of Eastern Christianity under Islam from Jihad to Dhimmitude should be required reading in Britain today. The word, “Dhimmitude,” is defined in The Jerusalem Post, of 2 January 1997, as “the Arabic-root term to identify the dehumanized condition of Christians and Jews under the humiliating domination of Moslem power.” Is this then to be the legacy the British, Europeans in general, and we in America leave our children and grandchildren if we continue down the path of self-destruction? What ever happened to “Onward Christian Soldiers”? Don’t think that what is happening in Britain, France (which, I might add, is a basket case, pretending that they do not have problems with their Muslim youth), and all over Europe cannot happen in America. Even former Secretary of State Colin Powell once remarked that the U.S. should bring in more clerics, more teachers and more journalists from Islamic nations, without ever suggesting that such new immigrants be screened for jihadist sentiments. There are public schools in California that require students learning about Islam to recite verses from the Koran, dress as Muslims, state their own jihad and pray to Allah (Washington Times, 16 January 2002). Schools throughout the United States provide prayer rooms for Muslim students during their one month of Ramadan, while for decades judges have told us that our own Christian children cannot even bend their heads to say a prayer over their school lunches. It appears that Christ is out of our schools – and Muhammad is in.Can Islamization and dhimmitude happen here? A Washington Post article of 15 November 2001 entitled “Bountiful, Blessed Month” reported that the 35 children of the Clara Muhammad School in Southeast Washington began their classes with the reading of the Koran followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. During the Pledge students recited: “One nation under Allah, indivisible, with justice and liberty for all, inshallah [Allah willing].” Is this a minor difference? Perhaps not. Daniel Pipes has noted that “the ambition to take over the United States is hardly a new one. The first Islamic missionaries from abroad arrived in the 1920s and unblushingly declared, ‘Our plan is, we are going to conquer America.’ Such hopes have become commonplace in recent years.” In Hamtramck, Michigan the noise ordinance was amended to allow the Islamic call to prayer to sound over loudspeakers at several points during the day. Meanwhile, Muslim power in the U.S. will continue to grow. Muslims in Michigan can thank former Republican Senator Spencer Abraham for their exceedingly high numbers. In his failed bid for re-election, Senator Abraham stated that if reelected he would increase the quota for bringing in more Muslims into the United States. A convert to Islam, Democrat Keith Ellison of Minnesota has become the first Muslim to be elected into Congress. And while Muslim influence grows, anti-terror efforts wane. Was the recent high-profile incident of imams being taken off a US Airways flight and now threatening to sue the airline merely a dry run, a test of our homeland security at airports? Or was it an attempt to end scrutiny of Muslims in airports? By playing the part of the victim, was it an effort to intimidate airline security into giving them a pass on future flights by officials not wanting to be accused of racial profiling? And of course, “ignorance” is the problem. Efforts will be stepped up, as if they weren’t already in full swing, to convince Americans that any Muslim who commits violence in the name of Islam is not a genuine Muslim, and that the genuine article is peaceful, peaceful, peaceful. And tolerant. One problem with such “education” efforts is that they do nothing to prevent “genuine” Muslims from turning without warning into “false” ones. Do Muslims in America really want to decrease fear and mistrust directed toward them? Easy. Just follow these four simple steps: 1. Stop blaming violent acts committed by Muslims in the name of Islam on the various sins of unbelievers. 2. Establish nationwide, compulsory programs in American mosques to teach against the jihad ideology and Islamic supremacism, by means including an explicit and definitive rejection of the literal meaning of many passages of Qur’an and Hadith. 3. Stop saying violent or hateful things in private when you think no non-Muslims are around. For example, the imam Umar Abdul-Jalil, executive director of ministerial services for the New York City Department of Correction, was secretly recorded last year while speaking at an Islamic conference in Arizona. Muslims, he said, invoking Qur’an 48:29, must be “compassionate with each other” and “hard against the kufr [unbeliever].” In Britain, Hamid Ali, imam of the mosque frequented by the July 7 bombers, praised the bombers and called their terror attack “good” in a conversation secretly recorded by an undercover journalist. Publicly, he had condemned the attacks. In a mosque in the Czech Republic, a Muslim secretly filmed by a documentary filmmaker says Islamic Shari’a law, including the stoning of adulterers, should be adopted by the Czech Republic. Cleveland imam Fawaz Damra, who has since been deported for failing to disclose his ties to terror groups, signed the Fiqh Council of North America’s condemnation of terrorism, despite having declared at an Islamic conference that “terrorism, and terrorism alone, is the path to liberation.” Do such incidents mean that every Muslim who professes to have adopted Western notions of pluralism and the equality of dignity and rights of non-Muslims and Muslims is dissembling? Of course not. But they do mean that non-Muslims are perfectly justified in being suspicious even when Muslim profess moderation and opposition to terror. Consequently deeds, not just words, are needed. To conclude my four recommendations, genuinely anti-terror Muslims should: 4. Actively work with Western law enforcement officials to identify and apprehend jihadists within Western Muslim communities. But it is unlikely that any of that will be done. Instead, these poor mistrusted, misunderstood folks will keep crying “Islamophobia” and trying to manipulate the American legal and political systems. By Bernd Debusmann for Reuters, with thanks to all who sent this in: WASHINGTON (Reuters)- When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo or a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed instantly.The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be “off his rocker.” The second congratulated him and added: “Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country … they are here to kill us.” Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver’s licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. “What good is identifying them?” he asked. “You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans.” At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments on why visual identification of “the threat in our midst” would alleviate the public’s fears, Klein revealed that he had staged a hoax. It drew out reactions that are not uncommon in post-9/11 America. “I can’t believe any of you are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything I said,” he told his audience on the AM station 630 WMAL (http://www.wmal.com/), which covers Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland “For me to suggest to tattoo marks on people’s bodies, have them wear armbands, put a crescent moon on their driver’s license on their passport or birth certificate is disgusting. It’s beyond disgusting. “Because basically what you just did was show me how the German people allowed what happened to the Jews to happen … We need to separate them, we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them wear the yellow Star of David, we need to put them in concentration camps, we basically just need to kill them all because they are dangerous.” The show aired on November 26, the Sunday after the Thanksgiving holiday, and Klein said in an interview afterwards he had been surprised by the response. “The switchboard went from empty to totally jammed within minutes,” said Klein. “There were plenty of callers angry with me, but there were plenty who agreed.” POLLS SHOW WIDESPREAD ANTI-MUSLIM SENTIMENT Those in agreement are not a fringe minority: A Gallup poll this summer of more than 1,000 Americans showed that 39 percent were in favor of requiring Muslims in the United States, including American citizens, to carry special identification. Roughly a quarter of those polled said they would not want to live next door to a Muslim and a third thought that Muslims in the United States sympathized with al Qaeda, the extremist group behind the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. A poll carried out by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an advocacy group, found that for one in three Americans, the word Islam triggers negative connotations such as “war,” “hatred” and “terrorist.” The war in Iraq has contributed to such perceptions. Klein’s show followed a week of heated discussions on talk radio, including his own, and online forums over an incident on November 22 involving six Muslim clerics. They were handcuffed and taken off a US Airways flight after passengers reported “suspicious behavior” that included praying in the departure gate area. The clerics, on their way to a meeting of the North American Imams Federation, were detained in a holding cell, questioned by police and FBI agents, and released. Muslim community leaders saw the incident as yet more evidence of anti-Muslim prejudice. IGNORANCE SEEN AS KEY PROBLEM Several American Muslims interviewed on the subject of prejudice over the past few weeks said ignorance was at the core of the problem. “The level of knowledge is very, very low,” said Mohamed Esa, a U.S. Muslim of Arab descent who teaches a course on Islam at McDaniel College in Maryland. “There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world and some people think they are all terrorists.” Hossam Ahmed, a retired Air Force Reserve colonel who occasionally leads prayer meetings for the small Muslim congregation at the Pentagon, agreed. “Ignorance is the number one problem.
